Schaumburg Accepting Nominations Through April 3 for Volunteer of the Year

The Village of Schaumburg is currently accepting nominations for Volunteer of the Year to be recognized at its upcoming luncheon - a public event that will feature TED Speaker and former CEO of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, Patricia Wilson.

Nominations for Schaumburg's Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer Organization of the Year and Youth Volunteer of the Year will be accepted through Monday, April 3. Nominees can represent social, civic, religious, community, school and nonprofit organizations within the Village of Schaumburg and Schaumburg Township community. Nomination materials are available on the Village of Schaumburg website at schaumburg.com/volunteeroftheyear.

"Volunteers are such an important part of a community's success. This program provides an opportunity to recognize individuals and organizations who give selflessly to make our community a better place," said Schaumburg Special Events Coordinator Roxane Benvenuti. "If you know a youth, adult or organization that volunteers in Schaumburg, please consider nominating them to be recognized at this special event."

Award recipients will be selected by a panel of judges from nominations received from residents and the business community. Recipients will be honored at the 35th annual Volunteer of the Year luncheon that will take place Tuesday, April 18 at Chandler's, 401 N. Roselle Road, in Schaumburg. The luncheon is open to the public; attendees do not need to be nominated or have someone nominated to attend the event. Those interested in attending may register and pay online at schaumburg.com/volunteeroftheyear by Sunday, April 9.

The keynote speaker at this year's luncheon will be Patricia Wilson, TED Speaker and Former CEO of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area. As one of the largest chapters, Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area granted more than 400 wishes per year for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Wilson is best-known as the mastermind behind turning San Francisco into Gotham City so that cancer patient Miles could become Batkid for a day. A team of thousands of public servants and community supporters was assembled by Wilson to fulfill the wish, which was supported by President and First Lady Obama; Batman actors Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck; an astronaut at the International Space Station; and several other celebrities.

Wilson formerly held leadership roles at WHRO in Virginia and KQED in San Francisco, the 5th largest PBS & NPR stations. She also produced multiple educational public TV series before serving as executive director of a science and wildlife environmental center.
