Hanover Township Receives Grant to Expand Senior Mental Health Services

The Hanover Township Department of Aging Services recently received a $40,000 grant from AgeOptions to offer the PEARLS program to older adults. Also known as the Program to Encourage Active Rewarding Lives, this service strives to reduce symptoms of depression and improve health-related quality of life by addressing problem solving skills for self-sufficiency.

"The spotlight for mental health services in our neighborhoods only grew bigger and brighter during and following the pandemic, especially for seniors," said Brian P. McGuire, Hanover Township supervisor. "Whether it be through grants or community partnerships, we continue to keep our eyes out for opportunities to expand these offerings to our most vulnerable residents."

To offer PEARLS, township staff needed to complete an 11-module training course that consisted of lessons discussing the research behind the program and how to implement the program at the township. Staff were also required to go through a practice live session with a PEARLS facilitator prior to getting certified.

The PEARLS coach uses two person-centered strategies, Problem Solving Treatment and Behavioral Activation, to meet the unique needs of each older adult. The program consists of six-eight sessions in which the older adult learns to problem solve and create possible solutions for their current problems. The goal is to learn problem-solving skills to cope better when future problems arise.
