Written at a time when the nations of modern Europe were taking shape, the anonymous author draws on a Judeo-Christian world view to imagine the age before his own and to reflect on the forces that dictate the fates of peoples. The group will read Seamus Heaney's 1999 verse translation. The discussion will be divided into three roughly equal parts corresponding to Beowulf's battles with three monsters of increasing fierceness.
