Schaumburg Places First in Digital Cities Survey

The Village of Schaumburg is pleased to announce it has placed first in the 2022 Digital Cities Survey, which evaluates municipalities across the country and ranks their performance on a variety of technical fronts such as strategic planning, constituent engagement, transparency, innovation, project management, network infrastructure, network security, and more.

"This award acknowledges the dedication and hard work of the entire Information Technology team," said Peter Schaak, director of Information Technology. "A first-place ranking is a recognition of their efforts that keep the village's robust and complex collection of systems and applications operating efficiently while being fiscally responsible. It is also their creativity and curiosity that keeps the organization at the forefront of new technologies."

The Center for Digital Government awarded Schaumburg first place in the category of municipalities with a population of up to 75,000. While the 2020 U.S. Census saw Schaumburg's population increase to 78,723, the survey takes into account a year of population adjustment. Prior to this year, the highest ranking the village achieved was third place.

The village completed several technology initiatives in 2022 to improve safety and ensure continued operations, including:

• Implementation of the Real-Time Information Center

• Implementation of multi-factor authentication (MFA)

• Village-wide monthly cybersecurity training

• Automation of key performance indicators

• Creation of a cybersecurity report card

• Implementation of a network monitoring solution that provides outage alerts

• Coordination of a data analytics committee to drive innovation

• Network security modifications

• Implementation of an emergency alerting system for public events

"I commend the village's Information Technology Department for providing innovative solutions that improve operations and enhance the experience for the residents, visitors and businesses," said Village Manager Brian Townsend.

The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute focused on technology policy and best practices in state and local government.
