Our endorsement for Cook County Board District 9: Maggie Trevor
This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.
The race to replace longtime Rebpublican Cook County Board commissioner Peter Silvestri includes two strong candidates: Republican Matt Podgorski and Democrat Maggie Trevor. They're running for the county's 9th District, which stretches northwest into Elk Grove, Wheeling and Palatine from Maine Township, Norwood Park and River Forest.
Podgorski, a logistics director from Chicago, emphasizes fighting rising crime by reviewing State's Attorney Kim Foxx's office's practices, funding and supporting police and improving electronic home monitoring, among other things. Trevor, a market researcher and business consultant from Rolling Meadows, does question some of Foxx's practices but believes the county board can truly influence the office through the county budget. Podgorski prefers that existing gun laws be followed, while Trevor supports banning the sale of military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. Trevor is more cautious about tax breaks for residents, while Podgorski wants more permanent tax relief. If you'd like to ensure that one of only two Republican-held seats on the county board stays that way, Podgorski is not a bad choice. But we endorse Trevor for her more thorough ideas and deeper knowledge of government.
