The Daffodil Project blooms in Northbrook

More than 80 families planted 500 daffodil bulbs this week in a new living memorial garden at Bernard Weinger JCC.

The effort was part of The Daffodil Project, which aspires to build a worldwide Living Holocaust Memorial by planting 1.5 million daffodils in memory of the 1.5 million children murdered during the Holocaust.

The Daffodil Project also supports children suffering in humanitarian crises around the world.

Holocaust survivors were joined by people from surrounding communities to plant the flowers and support the cause at JCC, 300 Revere Drive, Northbrook.

JCC Chicago, the Jewish-United Fund's Russian-speaking Jewish Division, and Holocaust Community Services CJE SeniorLife partnered to present The Daffodil Project and program at Bernard Weinger JCC.

The daffodil is symbolic because they are resilient and return with a burst of color each spring, signifying hope, renewal, and beauty. The flower's vibrant yellow color is also reminiscent of the yellow star that Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust. Courtesy of JCC Chicago
