Photography show celebrates women of a certain age

An exhibition by award-winning North Shore portrait photographer Julie Kaplan celebrates the beauty and confidence of women over 50.

"50 Over 50" - the full title includes the tagline, "Celebrating the Strength, Beauty & Wisdom of Women 50+" - will continue through Sept. 18 in the second-floor gallery space at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Ave.

The show is sponsored by the North Shore Art League.

"50 Over 50" is a collection of portraits Kaplan has recently taken, part of a passion project enlisting and portraying women who embody "being comfortable in our own skin," as the Julie Kaplan Photography website stated.

Kaplan was interested in photographing and celebrating women of different ethnicities, body types, backgrounds and cultures.

Many of the women who participated in her project live in and around the North Shore. Kaplan herself lives in Highland Park.

Kaplan's portraits of women, families, pets and other subjects has been recognized by the Professional Photographers of America and by Portrait Masters. She regularly wins the "Best Photographer" contest held by Make It Better magazine for the Chicago area.

From 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, the North Shore Art League will host a reception and discussion with Kaplan, an Art League member. For information, call the North Shore Art League at (847) 446-2870.
