'Of Sky, Earth and Water' exhibit at Fine Line features work by artist Terry Lacy
If you look at the work of Terry Lacy, you may think that he creates beautiful wall art using pastels. Look closer and you will see that Lacy is a fantastic artist who creates landscapes using his handmade paper.
The centuries-old process of hand papermaking has fascinated Lacy for years. Initially, the process was an integral part of society, providing paper for writing and printing information essential to any developed society's functioning.
Most papers were white or light-colored for practical purposes.
Lacy started working with handmade paper over 30 years ago and has continued exploring and fine-tuning the medium to produce his handmade paper landscapes.
Hand papermaking is a liquid medium that allows Lacy to manipulate the art into various possibilities.
Using the medium of pigmented cotton fibers suspended in water, Lacy makes his one-of-a-kind handmade paper pieces. He can contour the edges of each piece to follow images such as clouds, water and landforms and create multiple color variations and gradations.
The finished paper piece always has a unique mat finish which would be difficult to achieve in other mediums.
Having lived on a farm in the Wabash Valley since 1973, Lacy's work is significantly influenced by the farm and the surrounding landscape.
Lacy's interest in color and his early training as a graphic designer have given him the vision to stylize his papermaking skills into the beautiful artwork on display in the Kavanagh Gallery.
His work was first shown at Fine Line's Kavanagh Gallery in 2019 as part of the "Voices of the Midwest" show.
Lacy returns to the Kavanagh Gallery with a collection of 25 pieces of art depicting landscapes and seascapes saturated with color.
The exhibition titled "Of Sky, Earth and Water" will be displayed at the Kavanagh Gallery at Fine Line from April 1 to May 7 (closed for Easter on April 15-16).
The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fine Line will hold an in-person reception on Thursday, March 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. to officially open the show.
Lacy will be talking at 6:30 p.m. about his work and how he creates fantastic art pieces. It's an opportunity to meet the Indiana artist and hear about his passion for his art.
As with all gallery receptions at Fine Line, it is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
Fine Line Creative Arts Center is located at 37W570 Bolcum Road, west of Randall Road, in St. Charles.
