Marine Navigation Course - Starting March 17th at Libertyville HS
Calling all boaters! America's Boating Club of Waukegan is offering a one-of-a-kind Marine Navigation (aka Piloting) course that is hard to find these days. This course is designed for anyone who would like to learn the fundamentals of navigation. We will be covering the use of modern GPS technology, while also learning the traditional skill of charting a course on a nautical chart using a chart plotter and dividers.
The course includes many in-class exercises, with our one-on-one instruction meant to help you develop your charting skills. There will be plenty of hands-on practice and useful learning activities. We will cover the basics of coastal and inland navigation. This course will also provide you with a solid foundation, should you decide to continue with our Advanced Navigation course.
The ten-session course will be held Thursdays from 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Libertyville High School, starting on March 17, 2022. It ends on May 19th with an open-book final exam.
The course costs $95 for America's Boating Club members, or $125 for non-members. The course materials include a detailed Marine Navigation textbook and a Weekend Navigator resource book. A chart plotter and dividers will be needed for the course. They can be purchased the first day of class for $20.
So why not get the best of both worlds by learning how to use modern GPS technology to get you where you want to go, and also relying on the tried and true method of actual chart plotting on paper. You never know when your GPS system might fail on you. There's nothing like a back-up plan to save the day!
