Get your blue pinwheels to support Shelter, Inc. and kids who are abused

Beginning April 1, blue pinwheel gardens from Shelter, Inc., will be spinning throughout the Northwest suburbs in recognition of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

With one in five children being victims of abuse before the age of 18, families, businesses and government buildings will be displaying the pinwheels to show their support of abuse awareness and prevention.

Carina H. Santa Maria, executive director of Shelter, Inc., the child welfare agency leading the local campaign, said, "Child abuse is preventable, but it starts with education and our community working together."

Shelter offers opportunities for everyone to participate throughout the month. Besides ordering the pinwheels for free, Family Fun Boxes are available, Dine and Donate events from local restaurants, Wear Blue Day April 1 and the popular 5K Run/Walk 4 Kidz family event on April 23.

Learn more about participation and ordering, along with information about child abuse, by visiting shelter-inc.org or calling (847) 255-8060.

Founded in 1975, by the community, for the community, Shelter serves youths ages 24 and younger who have been victims of abuse, neglect or other crises in the Northwest suburbs.
