Lit Mag honors

In February, Glenbrook North High School's Lit Mag club was acknowledged by the National Council of Teachers of English with a REALM Award. REALM (Realizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines) recognizes school literary magazines produced by student with support of their teachers.

In REALM's 2021 awards, Glenbrook North's Lit Mag earned an "Excellent" distinction for the virtual magazine, "Eventide," the title of the club's Helicon magazine. REALM recognized 11 Illinois high schools and three colleges in its 2021 awards. Lit Mag produces two literary magazines a year, Euphonium and Helicon. They are creatively designed collections of students' photography, poetry, art and prose.

The award highlighted student editors Hallie Baer, Tacy Guest, Saruul Erdene-Jagdagdorg, Haley Sandlow and Baeyoung Yoo. The Lit Mat faculty advisers are Kerry Galson and Robert Milkowski.

Good Scouts

The Glenview Park District acknowledged several Eagle Scouts and Girl Scout 40044 for work they'd done on park district grounds from the summer of 2020 through winter 2021.

Girl Scout Troop 40044 - represented at the ceremony by Grace Carlson, Isabel Carlson, Sarah Foster, Alana Philbrick, Elisabeth Steiger, Maddie Uhlemann and troop leader Mary Steiger - did work at The Grove, which earned them their Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

The troop renovated The Grove's sensory and historic gardens, pulling weeds, adding productive plants, and tending the gardens for the entire summer. They built a compost big for the organic matter taken out of the garden and built a fence around the log cabin garden to keep animals out. Produce from the gardens could be used to help feed the animals in The Grove's Interpretive Center.

The Grove also was the subject of two Eagle Scout projects. Andrew Allison and his Scout Troop 55 put in a 350-foot cedar split rail fence along the walkway to the Interpretive Center.

Chris Fish and Troop 32 built and installed children's play stations throughout The Grove. They also built a water table, operated by an antique hand pump. This project encouraged outdoor exploration.

Scouts Dan Nardulli and Daniel Stein worked at Wagner Farm for their Eagle Scout projects. Nardulli and Troop 32 finished a market garden storage shed, built raised planter boxes, storage bins and drain boxes. Stein and Troop 2 converted a half-walled storage area into a fully framed and sided tack room, a room to keep riding equipment.

Kudos

Speaking of the Glenview Park District, it won first place for excellence in marketing and communication at the Illinois Park and Recreation Association's Showcase Competition. It also won awards in five other categories.

In addition, the Northbrook Public Library, the Wilmette Public Library District and the Glenview Public Library were named "Star Libraries" by Library Journal for libraries with an expenditure range between $5 million and 9.9 million. Based on things like circulation, computer users and library visits, the Northbrook and Wilmette libraries earned 5-star ratings, the third straight year the Northbrook Public Library received the award.
