St. Viator alumnae discuss career paths at Women's Event
Female students from freshmen through seniors took part in Saint Viator High School's first Women's Event on Feb. 15. The young women heard from eight graduates of Sacred Heart and Saint Viator during a comprehensive panel discussion before meeting individually with more than 25 other graduates of the schools in separate career path discussions.
"We were very pleased to have so many young women take advantage of this unique opportunity," said Alumni Relations Manager Krystal Harris (SVHS '15). "It was wonderful to see the interaction between our alumni and the students."
Harris said one of the key objectives was to allow the female students to hear from their predecessors about the process of developing a career plan and to help them build confidence in pursuing their career goals.
Panelists included members of the Sacred Heart Class of 1979 and others through the Saint Viator Class of 2015, each sharing their thoughts on what it takes for women to be successful in industries ranging from social work and medicine to consulting and economics.
"The advice shared by our panelists will be of significant benefit to the young women who attended," Harris said.
The students then spent an hour interacting with graduates in one-on-one discussions with groups covering careers in business, health sciences, social sciences, and nontraditional careers.
Those in attendance were also able to have a professional headshot taken for use in their college and career pursuits. Breakout session participants included members of the Sacred Heart of Mary classes starting with 1969 and others through the Saint Viator class of 2016.
The event was more than a year in the making under Harris' direction, along with an active committee of more than a dozen alumnae.
"As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of our school, this event really demonstrates our Lion for life commitment," Harris said. "We believe in having a strong community that welcomes and nurtures students from our first contact while they are in elementary school until they are well-established as alumni and in their careers."
