HERALD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: NEW TRIER'S HONOR ROBERTS

A junior out of Windsor, England, Honor Roberts helped New Trier win its 13th overall and third straight Illinois High School Field Hockey Association championship, 4-0 over Oak Park on Oct. 30 on the Trevians' home turf in Winnetka.

The speedy attack scored a goal and assisted on another in the title match on Oct. 30. She scored one of New Trier's goals in a 2-0 semifinal win over Glenbrook South on Oct. 28.

Roberts, who has committed to play field hockey at the University of Pennsylvania, finished the season with 36 goals and 18 assists as her team finished with a record of 22-6-1.

League coaches on Monday named her the IHSFHA player of the year.

"She's going to be one of my top players coming out of New Trier," said 33-year Trevians head coach Stephanie Nykaza. "She is definitely the highest-scoring on our team. That's her job, too - but she does score goals."

A member of the Windy City Field Hockey club program's Under-16 Flame squad, Roberts was noted by MAX Field Hockey among its top 40 players to watch in the West-Midwest region and was named to the all-tournament second-team at the MAX Field Hockey High School National Invitational in September at Villanova University.

"What makes her so good is her speed. She's extremely fast, and she's got excellent ball skills. The ball is right on her stick; she's very hard to defend. And she's a great team player," Nykaza said.

A three-year varsity player, in 2019 Roberts was the first freshman in 25 years to play for New Trier's varsity team and played in every game on the Trevians' 2019 championship run, according to a highlight video.

The video also noted she's an honor roll student at New Trier.

"She's on a pretty good path," Nykaza said.
