Jennie Hodgers Tent #103, Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, Bartlett Kelley Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, and the African American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago hosted Mr. David Keller, Founding Director of the Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation at their joint meeting on July 10, 2021. Camp Douglas, which is located on the near south side of Chicago, was one of the most important Union Civil War camps. Operating from 1861 to 1865, its reconstruction and preservation serve to safeguard the history of Chicago during this important period of American history. Mr. Keller is in demand as a speaker on the Civil War and Camp Douglas and has written several books on the camp, including The Story of Camp Douglas, Chicago's Forgotten Civil War Prison, and Robert Anderson Bagby, Civil War Diary (Annotated) 1863-1865. Mr. Keller led a spellbinding presentation on the history of the Civil War in Chicago and archeological efforts to preserve Camp Douglas. The following day, DUVCW Tent #103 member Sherry Williams led an online workshop with African American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago members, to assist them in writing membership applications.
