HERALD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: GLENBROOK NORTH'S JADE HUANG

In the Illinois High School Association badminton state finals, the first in-person IHSA championship of the 2020-21 school year, Glenbrook North sophomore badminton player Jade Huang went 4-2 in singles, finishing just outside of top-6 all-state designation at 7/8th.

Seeded seventh entering the finals, Huang won her first three matches to reach a state quarterfinal before falling to the No. 2 seed, Fremd's Rachel Ye, the eventual fourth-place finisher.

After defeating Deerfield's Ina Pan, Huang lost in the consolation semifinals to Sonali Manoharan of Waubonsie Valley, the No. 3 seed. Huang's 3.5 points put Glenbrook North 21st in the team standings.

Huang finished the season with a record of 19-2, and entered the state tournament unbeaten at 15-0, all of her wins coming in two games. She won the Central Suburban League South singles title and also took the singles title at the New Trier sectional.

"She is just a sophomore, so I'm definitely proud of all her accomplishments," said Glenbrook North badminton coach Tiffany Kim.
