Police identify driver in fatal Lisle crash

Police have identified a Chicago man as the driver who was killed early Tuesday morning in a one-car crash after a high-speed chase in Lisle.

Marcus L. Thomas, 30, died from injuries he suffered when the 2020 Honda Accord he was driving crashed on an entrance ramp at I-88 and Naper Boulevard.

Minutes earlier, at 1:13 a.m., a Lisle police officer had observed Thomas driving 20 mph over the speed limit near the 1500 block of Ogden Avenue. The officer pulled the driver over, police said in a news release.

As the officer waited for backup, he was notified the car had been reported stolen in Chicago on Dec. 16. Thomas then sped away on westbound Ogden.

The car was pursued by two Lisle police officers in separate vehicles.

Police located the car after it crashed on the entrance ramp from Naper Boulevard to eastbound I-88.

Officers worked to free Thomas and a 29-year-old female passenger until the Naperville Fire Department arrived to take them to Edward Hospital in Naperville. Thomas was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the unidentified woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Thomas had a revoked Illinois driver's license and was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service for weapon offenses. Two loaded handguns were recovered from the car.

"This was a tragic and unfortunate event," Lisle Police Chief Ron Wilke said in a statement.
