Hackney’s on Lake to close after 71 years in Glenview

After more than seven decades, Hackney’s on Lake in Glenview will close in early September, the restaurant announced on social media.

“Since 1955, this building has served up Hackneyburgers, French-Fried Onions, and a whole lot of Glenview memories — birthdays, sports banquets, first jobs, meeting friends at the Circle Bar,” the post reads. “It’s not a decision we take lightly. But a 700-seat restaurant made sense in the 1960s — it doesn’t in 2026.”

The post had over 2,400 reactions and more than 600 comments by Tuesday afternoon.

The closing leaves just one Hackney’s location — Hackney's on Harms, also in Glenview — remaining from what was once a hugely popular chain across the suburbs.

A location on Wheeling’s Restaurant Row closed in 2011, and the Lake Zurich Hackney’s closed in 2017, its building destroyed in a fire about 18 months later.

Hackney’s on Harms, the original location, opened in 1939 when Jim and Kitz Masterson bought a white house for $1 from their aunt Bebe Hackney, who operated a back porch snack stand. They then opened Hackney's restaurant in her honor at the site in Glenview and used a hackney coach as their logo.

“This will let us focus on creating an excellent customer experience at our Harms location, where our exciting renovations will be complete,” the company added in the post.
