Huntley church hosts drive-through food drive Nov. 14

Going into the holiday season, helping those in need is more important than ever due to the multifaceted effects of the coronavirus pandemic crisis.

Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church, 10805 Main St. in Huntley, is making a difference. The church is continuing its ongoing drive-through food drive to benefit the Grafton Township Food Pantry on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Huntley Boy Scout Troop 200 and members of the church's Community Outreach ministry and Life Groups will accept donations in the church parking lot from donors, who will not be required to leave their cars for ease and health safety reasons. In addition to canned goods, nonperishable food, men's and women's toiletries, disposable diapers, and paper goods, monetary donations are also accepted.

"We are grateful to the community for their generosity in supporting this important food drive during these very uncertain times," said Mike Yndestad, Shepherd of the Prairie staff member and volunteer with the community outreach team. "Monetary donations extend the reach in a big way. For every $1.00 donation, the Grafton Township Food Pantry is able to purchase an equivalent of $8 for food to help those in need."

The Grafton Township Food Pantry in Huntley serves individuals and families in need from Huntley, the Village of Lakewood, as well as portions of Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, and Crystal Lake. Since January, it has averaged serving 471 individuals per month.

The recent food drive donations from Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church to the food pantry have made a strong impact.

"Your church is amazing and does so much for our community," said Harriet Ford, member of the Grafton Township Food Pantry board of directors. "Thank you again for all you do for those in need."
