Cary preschoolers use science to create protective devices for annual Pumpkin Drop

A local Goddard School recently hosted a fun science experiment with a fall twist, all while being socially responsible!

Students at the Cary Goddard School participated in an pumpkin drop on Friday, Oct. 2, demonstrating what they learned about gravity. Putting health and safety at the forefront, everyone at the outdoor pumpkin drop practiced social distancing and wore protective face coverings.

Leading up to the event, the children attending the school learned the different scientific concepts of gravity, inertia and the scientific method.

The classes implemented what they learned by creating their own devices to protect their class pumpkin for the drop.

To bridge learning at home and at school, parents were encouraged to work with their child to create the contraption, supporting problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

The Goddard School partnered with the Cary Fire Department, who helped by dropping the pumpkins, safely protected in their creation. Children then guessed if the pumpkin broke or was protected.
