A recent golf matchup between the Glenbrook North and South were a little different from the usual.
For one thing, the competition for the Glenbrook Cup at Glenview Prairie Golf Club was set up in the match-play format, like the Solheim or Ryder cups in pro golf.
"It's not stroke play, so if you have a bad hole you're still able to compete," Glenbrook North golf coach Mike Schroeder explained as events got underway on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
The first six holes were played as foursomes with alternate shots, then play went to four-ball after the 7 tee.
On Thursday, Sept. 24, the first three holes were a continuation of the four-ball matches, and the final six were individual match play, one person versus the other directly.
But in addition to a different play format, there weren't the usual team uniforms, either. The players wore more casual clothing, creating a fun atmosphere. One player wore a print shirt with an oversized tie, for example, while others wore a variety of classic-style golf hats.
Glenbrook South won 8-4, and took home the hardware.
"They've had some great teams, and they made a lot of timely putts last night," said Schroeder, who started the Glenbrook Cup in 2013.
"We don't count it as an official won-loss," Schroeder said, "but it means a lot to the players, and they want to win it every year."
