The Northbrook library at 65 feet
This exterior photograph of the Northbrook library is taken at a relatively low altitude of 65 feet.
I wanted to obtain a view that showed the sharp corners and tapered roofline of this unique structure and was also high enough to be clear of distracting elements such as light poles and trees. But I also wanted to keep it low enough that the HVAC equipment on the westernmost portion of the building would not be prominent.
My first thought was to take this photograph in late afternoon or early morning, but the shadows just didn't look right when I visited during those periods.
I decided to take a straightforward approach, and I took the photo at 10:30 a.m. on a spectacular summer morning. I like how the sun shines into the glass, and the lines of the parking spaces add interest to the photo.
Whenever I take photos, I shoot a variety of angles and make my final decision during the editing process. I did happen to take a few photos at an altitude of nearly 200 feet so as to include the horizon line, and though I found it interesting that I could see the Deerfield water tower in the distance to the north, there were far too many elements that I found distracting.
