#HawthornCares: District 73 students, teachers support each other with signs of hope
Teachers and students at Hawthorn School District 73 in Lake County united to share the message "Hawthorn Cares." Hundreds of signs, collages, posters and sidewalk chalk popped up around the Hawthorn community, including Vernon Hills, Mundelein and Libertyville.
"I hope these messages bring a little bright spot to people as they go about their daily routines," said District Superintendent Dr. Peter Hannigan.
"It is important for the community to know that their school district cares, and that our Hawthorn spirit is still alive and well despite the closure of our school buildings."
The school district is also assisting community members by providing breakfasts and lunches to students and by delivering 400 electronic devices to students who lacked the resource. Also, the district's Key to 73 Education Foundation donated $18,000 toward the purchase of Wi-Fi hot spots for 150 Hawthorn families so all students can participate in the district's Remote Learning Plan during the COVID-19 pandemic.
