McHenry man arrested after standoff with police in Crystal Lake

A standoff that began when a man barricaded himself in a Crystal Lake home and threatened police officers with a knife ended peacefully Friday evening when the man surrendered several hours later, police said.

Matthew R. Reder, 24, of McHenry was taken into custody on two active warrants: one from McHenry County and another from DuPage County.

Crystal Lake police said officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress on the 500 block of Darlington Lane at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Police said a man there immediately barricaded himself in the bathroom and threatened the officers.

After several hours of negotiations, Reder surrendered.

Police said the case appears to be related to a domestic incident, but they are continuing to investigate and expect more charges.
