Umbrella Teahouse coming to Schaumburg's Town Square

Though the 22-year-old cafe at the Schaumburg Township District Library in Schaumburg closed last month, Umbrella Teahouse - a new business specializing in smoothies, coffees and flavored teas - is expected to help fill the void when it opens in the late spring barely a minute's walk away.

Before it opens, extra time will be needed to design and construct a new north entrance facade for the 1,330-square-foot space at 160 S. Roselle Road Unit A-2, in the Town Square shopping center.

Project architect Betsy Gensberg said the primary reason for the additional entrance is to provide a view of the pond on the north side of the building. The existing south entrance closest to the parking lot will be retained, she added.

Gensberg explained that the name Umbrella Teahouse comes from the plan to provide umbrella-covered tables within.

"Even sitting inside, it will feel like sitting outside," she said.

Schaumburg trustees last week approved a special-use permit for the space's use as a restaurant, even though food isn't expected to be a prominent part of the menu, as well as for a parking requirement variation.

Based on its size, the business requires 18 parking spaces. But the shared parking lot is expected to accommodate this additional use despite there being an overall deficit in terms of each tenant's parking requirements, Schaumburg Community Planner Marisa Krawiec said.

The new business is unique in its own building for not already having an entrance on the north and south sides. Most of the original tenants of Town Square had two entrances on opposite sides from the start, village officials said.
