Amazon surprises United Way with $45,000 donation at Spirit of Giving, volunteered to provide winter essentials and gifts
On Friday, Dec. 6, more than 40 associates from Amazon's Will County fulfillment centers presented a special holiday gift to United Way of Will County - $45,000 to help fund the nonprofit's programs. Amazon announced the donation at United Way's annual Spirit of Giving event.
Associates volunteered at Spirit of Giving to help United Way package winter essentials and gifts to be distributed to more than 500 community members in need.
During the event, Amazon associates helped stuff teddy bears for children trauma victims, decorated cards and ornaments for homebound seniors and nursing home residents, and boxed up care packages for homeless community members.
Amazon Joliet General Manager Brian Fontenot, Joliet Site Leader Chris Rodriguez, and Crest Hill General Manager Mike Fasolo presented the donation to United Way of Will County President and CEO Michael Hennessy and VP of Operations and Development Sarah Oprzedek.
Oprzedek said the $45,000 would go toward the nonprofit's critical, community impact work addressing immediate needs.
"The Amazon team members brought a magnetic energy and giving spirit that embodies what this season is all about - giving of yourself to help others," said Oprzedek. "When Amazon presented their generous corporate gift, we were flooded with feelings of excitement and gratitude! We are excited to carry on the spirit of giving impact and are grateful to meet additional community needs with the help of our partners - thank you, Amazon!"
Fontenot praised United Way of Will County for its programs while presenting the donation. Amazon employs more than 9,000 associates in Will County and has opened eight fulfillment and sortation facilities in the area, with another planned for Channahon.
"Amazon is proud to give back to the communities where our employees live and work," Fontenot said. "United Way is doing crucial work during the holidays, and year-round, to support Will County and ensure people of all ages have the tools and resources to fulfill their potential. We hope this $45,000 donation will help expand their great work."
