5-year-old helps Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg

The prospect of being able to pack food for hungry kids at Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg when he turned 5 years old wasn't enough for Jonas Fike of Crystal Lake.

So even before that highly anticipated birthday last summer, Jonas set up a lemonade stand outside his home where he also sold his beloved "ooey gooey" chocolate chip cookies and raised enough money to feed two children for a whole year.

Jonas' mother, Randi, said his inspiration came through knowing a family friend who works for Feed My Starving Children, and whom he believes undertakes that mission almost single-handedly.

Jonas once told his mother it was sad that some kids don't have food and that everyone should try hard to help.

Jonas said his experience of packing food at Feed My Starving Children was a fun one. He also explained why it was so important for him to raise money for his own donation first.

"Because I never had a lemonade stand before and I wanted to help starving children," Jonas said.

He has since become a Hope Ambassador for the organization, selling ornaments to raise even more money this holiday season.

The story of the little boy's selflessness is also featured on Feed My Starving Children donation cards, allowing people to make a gift in someone else's name.

Randi Fike believes her son's generosity can be as much a lesson for adults as for other kids.

"I think, most importantly for us, we want to teach our kids to be aware of the needs around them," she said. "You are never too young or have too little to make a difference. I think that it is even a good reminder for adults, because we often think we have to do big things to change the world. If we all did our small part daily, we could make a huge impact."
