Elk Grove, Rolling Meadows schools vie for Cereal Bowl trophy

Students and supporters of Elk Grove and Rolling Meadows high schools will compete on and off the field next month while helping the community at the same time.

The schools will collect cereal boxes as part of the fourth annual Elk Grove Township Cereal Bowl competition at the Oct. 4 football game. Elk Grove Township representatives will be at the main gate at Elk Grove High School to receive and tabulate donations dropped off for the township's food pantry.

Last year, the two schools donated a combined 1,460 boxes, with Elk Grove High collecting the most. Elk Grove has a 2-1 lead in the friendly competition since it started in 2016.

"We continue to be very proud of students from both high schools, who recognize the need in our community relating to our food pantry," Elk Grove Township Supervisor Mike Sweeney said in a news release.

The school that collects the most cereal will get an engraved traveling Cereal Bowl trophy.

Those who can't be at the game can still donate to the food pantry and get credit for their favored school. Donations will be accepted at township offices, 2400 S. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights, until 4 p.m. Oct. 4.
