Burr Ridge man charged in fatal Hinsdale overdose

A Burr Ridge man is being held on $1 million bail, accused of supplying a fatal dose of heroin to an acquaintance in January in Hinsdale.

Wasim Rashan, 27, of the 800 block of Lakeview Lane, is charged with drug-induced homicide and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance in the death of 23-year-old Lauren Tandy of Hinsdale.

Hinsdale police responded to a call of an unresponsive person late on Jan. 14. Upon their arrival, authorities found Tandy dead in the residence, the apparent victim of a drug overdose. Authorities recovered small bags in the victim's bedroom containing a substance later determined to be a mixture of heroin and fentanyl.

An investigation conducted by the DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group and Hinsdale police led to Rashan.

The following day, a search warrant was executed at Rashan's home during which police said they found small bags that matched the bags found at the victim's home, a scale with drug residue on it, and a list of names and phone numbers that included Tandy's.

On the day of her death, Tandy met with Rashan who supplied her with a bag of heroin, authorities said. They said Tandy ingested the heroin and consequently died from a drug overdose.

"Last year, DuPage County suffered 98 opioid overdose deaths, 83 percent of which were from illegal narcotics" DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. "To put an end to this senseless loss of life, we must do everything within our power to get the drugs off our streets and the dealers behind bars."

Rashan's is scheduled to be arraigned on June 10, in front of Judge George Bakalis.
