Fox River Grove's historical landmarks
• Norge Ski Jump and Club, founded in 1905, attracts thousands of spectators to its two annual ski jump competitions.
• The old Grove Theatre housed the first pipe organ to accompany silent films and its patrons included Al Capone and his bodyguards.
• The Picnic Grove and Marina, comprising 40 acres of picnic areas, baseball diamonds, a merry-go-round, large Ferris wheel, boat rides and beer halls, once attracted roughly 15,000 visitors daily. Today, the area is residential.
• The Crystal Ballroom, located in the Crystal Palace and owned by Louis Cernocky, hosted notable 1940s-era bands such as Guy Lombardo, Frankie Masters and Wayne King.
• The Bettendorf Castle sits atop a hill off Route 14 and Concorde Avenue near the railroad tracks. Built by hand over 36 years by Theodore Bettendorf, it is a replica of a castle in Luxembourg where Bettendorf grew up. It includes a working drawbridge, moat and a dungeon and now is a couple's home.
