SALUTE, INC. Hosts Personal Safety and Vigilance Training for Runners and Community Members

Chicagoland runners and community members are invited to a personal safety and vigilance training event, which is brought to the community by SALUTE. INC., a Palatine, Illinois based non-profit dedicated to meeting the financial, physical and emotional needs of injured military service members, veterans and their families. The non-profit has been involved in the community since 2003, sponsoring a number of racing events throughout the year and supporting local athletes with free training programs, running groups and resources.

"Many runners are out alone running with earbuds or in isolated areas," said Co-founder and Executive Director, Mary Beth Beiersdorf. "They become easy targets and we want to help make sure our runners and all community members are safe when out in their neighborhoods whether they are running or just walking the dog."

The workshop, which takes place on Saturday, March 2, will teach runners and community members applicable skills for everyday life, including specific actions to take in your home, office, car and other public locations if you feel uncomfortable, insecure or threatened. Attendees will learn what to do, what to say and how to escape if in a dangerous situation.

The workshop will be led by Barbara Jordan, an elite athlete, coach, instructor and broadcaster. After a family member was a victim of predatorial violence, Barb developed a unique, keen awareness and founded Always Bev to share her techniques with others. Barbara now travels the country educating others on the importance of awareness and vigilance in everyday life.

The workshop, sponsored by Getburbed.com, takes place Saturday, March 2, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Pioneer Park Community Room located at 500 South Fernandez in Arlington Heights. Men and women of all ages are welcome, and doors open at noon. Tickets are $20 per person and $30 per family. Space is limited, so please RSVP to sue@saluteinc.org.
