Bundle up for fun at Spring Valley Winter Fest
So many people retreat indoors during the snowy winter months. Schaumburg Park District is changing that with the Spring Valley Winter Fest, set for noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19 and 20, at 1111 E. Schaumburg Road.
Demonstrations of dog sledding, ice fishing, snowshoeing and more will help you have fun outdoors this winter.
Dog sleds have been used for travel for thousands of years, and Winter Fest visitors can watch dog sledding up close. The Windy City Mushers, a local dog sledding organization, will be on hand all weekend for live demonstrations and to share more about the history of dog sledding.
“Watching a happy and excited team of dogs pull a sled is unforgettable,” said Dave Brooks, manager of Spring Valley. “Visitors even have the opportunity to meet the dogs after the demonstrations.”
Spring Valley staff is also hoping to change the perception that outdoor activities are off limits during the winter.
“Staying active during the winter can be tricky. But with a little education and the proper clothing, there are a ton of options, such as snowshoeing, for outdoor fun and fitness,” Brooks said.
Snowshoeing is a great way to explore nature while also getting a workout. Snowshoes fit over your regular shoes and work by distributing your weight to keep you from sinking through the snow.
Weather permitting, Winter Fest attendees can try snowshoeing for themselves.
For those needing a few moments to warm up, a variety of activities will be offered inside the Nature Center, including ice experiments, crafts and a Dress the Snowman game.
Additional outdoor activities will include two-person log sawing, marshmallow roasting, horse-drawn wagon rides and a demonstration of ice fishing (weather permitting). Food and drink will be available for purchase.
“Winter isn't necessarily a time for human hibernation,” said Mary Rice, Spring Valley program coordinator. “There is a lot about the great outdoors that can be enjoyed in the winter, and Spring Valley is the place to come and take advantage of the season.”
Admission is $3 per person or $12 per family; free to children 3 and younger.
