Signal Hill DAR receives certificate for honoring Vietnam veterans

The Signal Hill Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution recently received certification from the Department of Defense for the Barrington chapter's participation in this congressionally approved program.

Congress passed legislation to authorize the Department of Defense to establish the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, which was officially launched on Memorial Day 2012.

The primary mission is to thank Vietnam veterans (and Vietnam-era veterans) who served during 1955-1975 and their families. The program runs from 2012-2025.

Signal Hill applied to become Vietnam War Commemorative Partners in December 2014 and was accepted in January 2015.

The chapter received a commemorative flag for display at this year's annual Barrington Memorial Day parade.

The chapter's commitment is to have at least two events per year honoring these veterans, including the Fourth of July and Veterans Day.

In the fall of 2017, some of the members volunteered to work the community meal, with plans to do so again in the fall of 2018.

Signal Hill also honored three veterans who presented a talk on the Vietnam War at a chapter meeting, as well as honoring a veteran when visiting the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago. There are numerous ideas/suggestions for activities.

The Signal Hill Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, raises funds throughout the year and distributes to 501(c)3 organizations, whose missions support DAR's mission of education, historic preservation, patriotism, conservation, and Native American issues.

The chapter was founded in 1972, and is dedicated to preserving history, promoting patriotism, conservation and historic awareness in our community, and securing America's future through better education for children. Membership is established through approval of documentation of direct lineage from an American Revolutionary War patriot.
