Lake Zurich's Zobel nets MVP honor
Lake Zurich senior forward McKenna Zobel has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for her recent high school girls basketball performances.
McKenna Zobel, Lake Zurich: The senior forward came up two big postseason performances to help extend Lake Zurich's season. She had 15 points to help the Bears past Grant 48-24 in a regional semifinal, then came up with 17 in a 42-31 win against Lake Forest at Grayslake North.
Nikki Baird, Wheaton North: Cleared to play at the start of the week after a broken wrist kept her out for five weeks, Baird got only half a practice in before playing in the regional. The 6-foot-2 junior guard, committed to Belmont, contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds in the championship against Elk Grove.
Alexa Davis, Rolling Meadows: The junior guard had two big games to help the Mustangs win the Class 4A Addison Trail regional championship. In the semifinal, she collected 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists in a 62-50 win over St. Charles East before scoring 15 points with 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebounds in the 65-50 win over Glenbard West for the championship.
Erin Golden, Batavia: This 5-foot-7 guard capped a breakout sophomore season with a game-high 19 points plus 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots in a season-ending loss to defending Class 4A state champion Geneva in the Class 4A regional finals at Schaumburg. Golden also scored 15 points with 4 rebounds and 3 steals in a win over Bartlett in the regional semifinals.
