CCU Celebrates International Credit Union Day

Waukegan, IL, October 10, 2017: Consumers Credit Union's nine Service Centers will join in a celebration with credit unions worldwide to commemorate International Credit Union Day on Thursday, October 18, 2017. Officers, Directors, Managers and staff at Consumers Credit Union ($1.15 Billion, Waukegan, IL; CCU) will be on-hand to greet Members and the general public. Those visiting a CCU office on Credit Union Day will enjoy a sweet treat and will receive a free gift.

Observed every year since 1948, International Credit Union Day is the one time each year when the entire credit union movement comes together to celebrate what makes credit unions the best financial partners for all people. In that spirit, the theme for 2017 is "Dreams Thrive Here," symbolizing the positive impact credit unions have on the lives of everyone in their service area, or field of Membership.

"One of the fundamental goals of credit unions is to identify how we can make a difference in the lives of our Members and their families," noted Sean M. Rathjen, CCU CEO. "International Credit Union Day provides an opportunity to share just how we accomplish this with both our Members and others in the communities we serve. CCU is proud to join hands in this celebration with credit unions across the United States while expressing our thanks and appreciation to our Members. We encourage everyone to stop by, meet our dedicated staff and management team, grab a free gift and enjoy some treats on this very significant day."

The credit union movement began in 1844 in Rochdale, England, with a strong focus placed on working with the community to provide products and services helping Members achieve their life goals and dreams. This still holds true today. Others gravitated to the movement quickly, with credit union activity first showing in Germany around the 1850s, then across the ocean in Canada. The first credit union in the United States was formed in the early 1900s and by World War II, there was at least one credit union in almost every state.

With popularity of the credit union movement on the rise, a need gradually emerged to establish an annual occasion to celebrate the positive impact credit unions make on the lives of its Members. By 1948, credit union leaders in the U.S. felt strongly enough to set aside a day to bring Members together. As a result, Credit Union National Association and CUNA Mutual Insurance Society selected the third Thursday of October to recognize the cooperative history of credit unions and the many benefits available for its Members. Today, credit union Membership extends to more than 100 million people in the U.S. and a great deal more.

CCU celebrates the occasion from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 18. For more information about International Credit Union Day, contact Sean Rathjen, CEO, at (847) 782-4670.
