Girls volleyball: Hersey rallies past Buffalo Grove
Hersey came to within one match of clinching a tie for its 14th straight Mid-Suburban East title under coach Nancy Lill with a 22-25, 25-19, 25-22 victory at Buffalo Grove on Tuesday night.
The Huskies (16-5, 7-0) lead Rolling Meadows (5-2) by 2 matches with three to play.
Balance was the name of the game for Hersey, which was led by Alessia Olhava (6 kills), Amy Morgan (6 kills), Janine Boyan (5), Kati Kaburov (5), Juliette Vandenherik (5) and Haylee Martin (5).
Emma Strozewski (14 assists) and Olhava (15 assists) set the attack while Julia Coniglio serve a pair of aces.
Molly Twohig collected 26 digs to lead the back row while Martun had 3 blocks.
Buffalo Grove (9-8, 3-4) was led on attack by Nicole Langer (8 kills), Claire Ferriss (7), Lauren Horvath (6) and Mary Nowlan (6) while Maggie Streckert collected 20 assists. Riley Cross had 11 digs and Leah Masciopinto 7.
Rolling Meadows d. Elk Grove: Eleanor Errico (7 kills), Elisa Kowalski (5), Leticia Avellaneda (4) and Natalie Anderson (4) led the attack for visiting Rolling Meadows (13-13, 5-2) in a 25-21, 25-18 MSL East win. Natalie Klancnik (12 assists) and Mallory King (7) set the offense while Macie Robinson collected 7 digs and Errico had 2 blocks.
Rachel Kandefer led Elk Grove (2-19, 0-7) with 9 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces while Autumn Gouge added a air of kills.
Wheeling d. Prospect: Visiting Wheeling improved to 13-12 and 2-5 with a 28-30, 26-24, 25-20 MSL East win as Kamila Staniszewski (13 kills), Nicole Nguyen (9), Rugile Jaciunas (5 kills) and Nosa Igiehon (4) led the attack.
Wildcats setter Jessica Janowski was 99-of-101 with 32 assists while Nguyen led with 23 digs and Jazmyn Veloso had 19.
Prospect (6-14, 4-3) was led by Emma Cogan (8 kills), Sloane Petlak (8), Grace Cacini (6) and Elizabeth Abraham (4) on attack. Gianna Russo (11 assists, 2 aces), Sarah Skaggs (6 assists, 8 digs) and Valerie Thomas (6 assists, 17 digs) handled the setting duties.
Schaumburg d. Hoffman Estates: Visiting Schaumburg (13-7, 6-1) remained tied for first in the MSL West with a 25-4, 25-18 MSL West victory.
Morgan Sterrett (8 kills, 8 digs), Dana Kiszkowski (4 kills, 1 block, 1 ace) and Ari Doroskin (3 kills, 1 block, 1 ace) led the Saxons' attack while setter Michelle Candotti had 20 assists, 2 aces and 1 kill. Gabby Paelmo collected 7 digs.

Palatine d. Conant: Host Palatine (13-8, 3-4) posted a 25-12, 25-14 MSL West triumph over Conant (6-15, 2-6).
Benet d. St. Viator: Benet posted a 25-11, 25-14 ESCC win. Catherine Hickey put down 10 kills and Kate Nottoli had 4 for the Lions (21-6, 2-3), who received 20 assists from setter Michaela Mueller and 7 digs from Carrie Leazer in the ESCC match.
Maine West d. Maine East: Host Maine West (13-8, 4-2) won the CSL north match 25-16, 25-15 as the Warriors were led by Ally Block (18 assists, 8 digs), Jessica Riedl (6 kills), Ellie Centella (6 kills) and Sam Parcell (4 kills, 3 blocks).
Hinsdale South d. Leyden: Visiting Hinsdale South posted a 25-16, 25-15 over Leyden which was led by senior middle hitter Victoria Schulmeister (4 kills, 4 blocks).
Harper d. Joliet: Ellie Burzlaff (16 kills), Breanna Cullen (12), Sarah Udoni (10), Marielle Lugo (6) and Angelina Nichols (5) led No. 1-ranked Harper (22-4), 7-0) to the 24-26, 25-16, 25-18, 25-11 victory.
Setter Emily Huprich collected 48 assists and Ariana Chelini led with 24 digs followed by Cullen (16) and Karolina Sas (13).
