Eligible citizens encouraged to sign up to vote on National Voter Registration Day

In celebration of National Voter Registration Day Tuesday, Sept. 26, Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham encourages all eligible citizens to vote by registering to vote if they are not already registered.

"We are excited to join the national efforts to raise awareness about voter participation on National Voter Registraton Day. I encourage any Kane County residents who are not registered to vote or who have recently moved, married or changed their name to stop by the Kane County Clerk's office so that we can get them registered," Cunningham said.

Registering to vote is easy. Kane County residents have several convenient options in which they can register: in person at the Kane County Clerk's Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building B, Geneva; by mail by using the form available at kanecountyelections.org; or online via the Illinois State Board of Elections website at ova.elections.il.gov.

Two forms of identification with at least one showing a current residence address are needed to register in person.

Information about what identification is acceptable can be found at www.kanecountyelections.org/VoterRegistration/Registration.aspx.

Held annually on the fourth Tuesday in September, National Voter Registration Day is a nationwide effort by citizens, businesses and organizations to create awareness of voter registration and voting and to remind and encourage eligible Americans to prepare to exercise their most basic civil right, their right to vote.

Requirements to register to vote in Illinois include the following: U.S. citizenship; being at least 18 years of age by Election Day or 17 years of age to vote in a general primary if individual will be 18 as of the following general election; and having been a resident of the precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day.

As the election authority for Kane County, the clerk's office provides many resources for those interested in registering to vote or who wish to be informed about the elections process.

The clerk's office provides information and resources directly to Kane County residents through the Voter Outreach Program, the VoteMobile, participation in community events and forums, the clerk's website at www.kanecountyelections.org, www.facebook.com/kanecountyclerk, or @KaneCoILClerk.
