Crystal Lake cardboard regatta canceled due to flooding
The 33rd annual America's Cardboard Cup Regatta scheduled for Saturday in Crystal Lake has been canceled due to flooding and high water.
The Crystal Lake Park District has determined that Main Beach is unsafe and poses a hazard. For safety reasons, the park district and the regatta board decided not to hold the event this year.
The regatta benefits charities in the McHenry County area. Individual participants and businesses build boats made of cardboard and race them along a 200-yard course at Main Beach. Awards are presented in various categories.
All donations made to the regatta and registrations will be used as a credit toward next year's events and activities.
