Boy Scout Kick Starts Sensory Garden

Boy Scout Joe Maret designed the Sensory Garden to promote interest in nature by enticing touching, smelling and looking at nature's beauty. Courtesy of Chris Maret

Joe Maret's Eagle Scout Project creates a way to engage your human senses for an enjoyable experience with nature.

With the generous help of local Mount Prospect donors, the funds were gathered to purchase materials. Architect Wayne Zediker of Mount Prospect contributed time and tools enabling Joe Maret to create the design. Troop 23's Boy Scouts then helped fabricate the garden beds, and installed them on June 10th, 2017.

The gardens beds are made of long lasting cedar wood and the plants here were handpicked by the River Trail Nature Center staff. The garden is designed for wheel chair height access; three boxes for adults, and five boxes for child size wheel chairs. The garden paths will be installed at a later date by the River Trail Nature Center.

This project is part of a Kickstarter for more projects to come to the surrounding area over the next five years. Interested Boy Scouts who are ready to start their Eagle Project can contact the nature center for project opportunities. The center is at 3120 Milwaukee Ave., Northbrook.
