McHenry County, Red Cross open flood aid centers
Flood-weary residents near the Fox River seeking respite from their cleanup efforts can use a reception center set up by the American Red Cross and McHenry County.
The center will be open to affected residents from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Nunda Township offices, 3510 Bay Road in Crystal Lake. They also can visit the Home Depot at 2461 N. Richmond Road in McHenry, to pick up a free cleanup kit.
With the Fox River receding, recovery and cleanup operations are under way in McHenry County and elsewhere.
A Multi-Agency Resource Center also is being opened so residents impacted by the flood can meet with county, regional and statewide disaster organizations, along with the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and other aid organizations to get information and guidance on cleanup, assistance and recovery. McHenry County Health Department officials will be on-hand to give out free water testing kits to residents whose wells were affected by the flooding. The center will be located at McHenry Township hall, 3703 N. Richmond Road in Johnsburg. It will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Affected residents and business owners can complete an online damage assessment form by visiting co.mchenry.il.us/flood or call the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development at (815) 334-4560 to complete the assessment.
McHenry County could be eligible for state and federal recovery aid through residents reporting property damages caused by the flood or storms. Aid teams will be in flood-affected areas performing damage assessments Thursday and Friday.
Residents should contact their township or municipality for information about waste haulers, special instructions or costs associated with disposal of flood-damaged items, or questions about the disposal of specific items.
