Motorcycle group plans awareness picket Saturday

Members of a motorcyclists rights advocacy group will remind other motorists Saturday to be aware they share the road.

The DuKane chapter of ABATE will station members at six intersections along Route 47, from Lily Lake to Sugar Grove.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 6, they will carry signs urging car drivers to keep an eye out for motorcyclists.

And they will also be taking photographs of distracted drivers who are texting or using a handheld device while driving.

"This is one thing that we do to try to make people aware at the start of the motorcycling season," said Greg Smith, a member of the chapter.

ABATE stands for A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education. The DuKane chapter is based out of West Chicago.

The organization offers education on motorcycling safety, and monitors political issues related to motorcycling.

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in Illinois.
