Suspects admit stealing Palatine man's cellphone
An 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman who stole a cellphone from a Palatine man last October pleaded guilty to robbery charges Monday, court records show.
Joanna Gutierrez of Chicago - who was on probation for aggravated battery at the time of her arrest - was sentenced to three years in prison in exchange for her plea. She received credit for 134 days in custody.
Co-defendant Esteban Andrade, also of Chicago, was sentenced to two years of probation in exchange for his guilty plea. Both defendants were ordered to pay $654 in fines.
Prosecutors say Guitierrez, Andrade and a juvenile began yelling obscenities at a man walking on the 700 block of East Rand Grove Lane late on Oct. 29, 2016.
The man tried to flee, but the defendants followed him, struck him and took his cellphone, prosecutors said during the defendants' bond hearing last year.
Andrade had no criminal background. Gutierrez had convictions for retail theft and battery, prosecutors said.
