Dawn Patrol: High schoolers to take SAT, not PARCC

<h3 class="briefHead">SAT test, not PARCC, for high schoolers:</h3>

The state board of education will pay for all high school juniors to take the SAT college entrance exam this coming school year, education officials announced Monday. The move comes after many suburban districts complained about having to pay for their students to take a college-entrance exam this spring. Some of those same local educators said they're thrilled with the news the state will pay for the test and not require juniors to take the PARCC. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Crash injures 3 in Naperville:</h3>

Investigators are probing the cause of a crash on Book Road in Naperville between 75th and 83rd streets that caused "life-threatening injuries" and required three people to be taken to hospitals, authorities said. The crash occurred on a hilly segment of road through Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve and caused Book Road to be closed while the investigation began. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Gas leak closes road in Long Grove:</h3>

Firefighters closed Route 83 south of Route 45 in both directions for a time last night as they searched for the cause of a gas leak at a business in Long Grove. A damaged gas meter that caused the leak had to be found and shut off before crews could reopen the road. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Mundelein orchard matriarch to be laid to rest:</h3>

The former co-owner of one of Lake County's most popular apple orchards, Quig's Orchard in Mundelein, has died in Reno, Nevada, and will be laid to rest during a visitation and funeral Thursday in Mundelein. Marion Quig, 74, operated the orchard on Route 83 north of Midlothian Road with her husband, Robert, for 58 years before moving to Wisconsin. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Suspects in jail, hospital after South Elgin invasion: </h3>

One suspect in a South Elgin home invasion is facing $300,000 bail in the case while another is in the hospital being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg he suffered during the attack. Each man faces six to 30 years in prison with no option for probation if convicted of home invasion. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Cubs hit halfway point after breakdown:</h3>

The Cubs season seemed in great shape a few weeks ago before the team was swept by the St. Louis Cardinals, starting a stretch with a 6-15 record in 21 games. With their lead in the National League Central shrunk, but still the largest in any division in baseball, the Cubs have seen much more good than bad during the first half of the season. Full story.

The White Sox describe themselves as "antsy," "pushing each other" and "trying to do something special here" as the season hits the midway point for today's All-Star game. There have been "peaks and valleys" but "right now we're together," players and coaches have said. Full story.
