3 taken to hospitals after Book Road crash in Naperville

Book Road is closed in Naperville between 75th and 87th streets as police investigate a head-on crash with "life-threatening injuries," authorities said.

Three people have been taken to area hospitals and two of them had to be extricated from their vehicle by Naperville firefighters, Bureau Chief Amy Scheller said.

The crash occurred about 4 p.m. on Book Road between 75th and 83rd streets on a hilly segment of Book that travels through Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve.

A van with a large load of items in the back and a four-door sedan collided on a low-lying stretch about halfway between 75th and 83rd. After the crash, the vehicles rested in a ditch to the side of the road.

Sgt. Steve Schindlbeck described some of the injuries as "life-threatening" and said police continue to investigate.

Ambulances took two of the patients to Edward Hospital in Naperville and one to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. The fire department had cleared the scene shortly after 5 p.m., but police officers and DuPage County sheriff's personnel remained.
