Water commission ads distort the truth

As a former judge in DuPage County and former chairman of the DuPage Water Commission, I am disturbed by the negative ads distributed by the Moore campaign against Tim Elliott.

Moore's tactics of misrepresenting and distorting facts regarding the water commission rises to the level of lying to the voters. For this reason, I must respond to these false statements.

No money was ever lost or went missing from the water commission. Accountant errors occurred in 2007, before Tim Elliott was on the commission. Tim Elliott was appointed to the commission, in 2008, and he was part of the team that took steps to correct the results of the accountant's errors.

The reforms that Tim Elliott and his fellow board members took to restructure the water commission included:

• Removing the financial administrator and general manager

• Selecting a new treasurer

• Recommended Jenner & Block to fully investigate the error

• Secured interim financing to ensure on-going operations

• Identified, interviewed and recommended the current general manager

• Instituting new financial controls and a transparent financial reporting system.

The reforms listed above can be verified and sourced. The Moore campaign should have done their research. The statements made in her mailer could be lies in a court of law and possible grounds for civil or criminal contempt. Moore has disparaged the members of the water commission who worked diligently and ethically for reform.

Maligning your opponent, and distorting the truth in political campaigns, has become way too common. My father once told me that, in time, DuPage County politics would become more like Cook County politics. It appears the Moore campaign is hastening that prediction.
