Cook sheriff names youth service medal winners

Among 313 high school students representing 55 towns who received the Cook County Sheriff's Youth Service Medal of Honor for volunteering more than 100 hours to their community and others in the last year were a number from the Northwest suburbs.

They are: Emilee Gonzalez, Arlington Heights; Jack Thennisch, Barrington Hills; Harshini Chellasamy, Payton Muhs, Maria Saucedo, James Tiao, Justin Tiao, all of Barrington; Giada Morresi, Des Plaines; Dristi Chaudhuri, Matthew Heroldt, Connor Kenyon, all of Hoffman Estates; Rahul Shah, Mount Prospect; Daniel Tokarz, Palatine; Elizabeth Einig, Schaumburg; and Nicholas Hall-Skank, Streamwood.

Applicants also were required to submit essays about their experiences. Examples of service range from providing cancer support services and assisting in food pantries to volunteering at their local church.

The youths were honored in a ceremony Wednesday night at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills.
