Crespo Supports State Funds for Domestic Violence and Emergency Services

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - State Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, released the following statement after supporting Senate Bill 2039 to release payments owed to local municipalities and to fund LIHEAP and domestic violence shelters:

"I am disappointed funding for domestic violent shelters and energy assistance for thousands of low-income seniors were put in jeopardy for months. After repeated attempts, I was finally able to help pass this bipartisan piece of legislation allowing victims of domestic violence and the elderly to continue to receive the care and support they need. These programs help build up the middle-class, and I will fight to protect them.

"Since July, cities and towns across Illinois have not been receiving payments owed to them and as a result many have been unable to cover basic expenses. Highway departments have been unable to purchase necessary supplies for the winter and 9-1-1 call centers were at the risk of closing their doors. These payments and the public's safety should have never been withheld in the first place.

"The legislature still faces many challenges in the weeks and months ahead. Illinois lacking a fiscally responsible budget is putting our credit rating at risk and jeopardizing our state's higher education system. I remain focused on passing a fair and responsible budget with a balanced approach, which protects the middle-class and serves as a blueprint toward creating a stronger Illinois."
