Breast Cancer Support Group meeting to focus on peripheral neuropathy

The next meeting of the Breast Cancer Support Group will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Advocate Sherman Hospital, Lake Level Conference Room 1, 1425 N. Randall Road, Elgin.

The topic for December's meeting will be "Living Well with Peripheral Neuropathy," presented by Pam Shlemon, president and executive director of the Foundation for Neuropathy.

Sick or damaged nerves can occur as a result of breast cancer treatment. Shlemon will provide an overview of the foundation and discuss treatment options and strategies to manage pain and neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy is more than the experience of physical pain. Because it is chronic and unpredictable, peripheral neuropathy affects many areas of functional activities as well as social interactions and psychological well-being. The discussion will focus on strategies that can help patients with peripheral neuropathy to optimize the quality of their lives.

The support group meets the second Tuesday of every month, and provides support, education and understanding for those with breast cancer, survivors, family members and friends. It also offers participants an opportunity to connect with other survivors, and provides information about treatment options available at Sherman Hospital.
