Crespo to Chair the House Education Policy Committee

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - State Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, will work to safeguard local schools and foster stronger standards for education as the new chair of the House Elementary and Secondary Education: School Curriculum and Policies Committee.

"We have an obligation to ensure that all Illinois students are able to access a world-class education that is second to none," Crespo said. "As chair of the School Curriculum and Policies Committee, I plan to advocate for legislation that will help our administrators, teachers and students access the tools they need to succeed."

Crespo has served as a member of the bipartisan education committee since he was elected to the General Assembly and has a longstanding record of supporting policy decisions that protect local schools. Crespo's district is home to School District U-46, the second largest school district in the state; Township High School District 211, the largest high school district; and Community Consolidated School District 54, the largest elementary district.

The House Elementary and Secondary Education: School Curriculum and Policies Committee is responsible for overseeing the consideration of a wide-array of matters ranging from establishing standards for educational excellence to instituting policies to keep schools safe.

"Our district is home to some of the largest school districts in the state, and as a result, any education policy decisions that are made have direct impact on thousands of students, parents and homeowners," Crespo said. "There is not a one-size-fits-all approach to education, and as a result, it is important that we look out for the welfare of all students when considering changes in education policy."

Crespo also chairs the House Appropriations: General Services Committee and plans to use his experience as the leader of the bipartisan budget committee to foster compromise and real solutions to the issues affecting the education community.
