Chicago Blackhawks top Red Wings in preseason opener

Blackhawks 5, Red Wings 4 (OT)

First things first: The Blackhawks won their preseason opener in front of 20,736 fans Tuesday night at the United Center, getting goals from Kyle Baun, Jonathan Toews, Teuvo Teravainen, Ryan Garbutt and Trevor Daley.

The scariest moment for Hawks fans came when Marko Dano, the 20-year-old phenom who has stood out in the early days of camp, took a vicious hit from Brendan Smith early in the second period. Dano stayed on the ice for several seconds and was taken into the locker room. He returned, however, missing only a few minutes.

Scoring:

1. Kyle Baun scored the first goal of the preseason at 7:16 of the first period when he whacked a rebound in as he was falling to the ice. Assists went to Ryan Garbutt and Jan Hejda, who fired the initial shot.

2. Just 68 seconds later, Jonathan Toews scored when he sniped a shot past Jimmy Howard. Assists to defensemen Trevor Daley and David Rundblad.

3. The Hawks went up 3-0 when Teuvo Teravainen scored a power-play goal after Howard gave up a rebound on a Toews shot.

4. Anthony Mantha scored with 5:05 left in the second period for Detroit, making it 3-1.

5. Ryan Garbutt gave the Hawks a 4-1 lead at 2:39 of the third period. Assist went to Brent Seabrook.

6. Wings alternate captain Riley Sheahan made it 4-2 at 5:58 of the third period.

7. Detroit made it 4-3 with 7:07 remaining, cashing in on a Patrick Kane turnover. After two good scoring chances, Teemu Pulkkinen scored from in close on Mark Visentin.

8. Detroit tied the game on a power-play goal by Luke Glendening with 2:05 left.

9. It took just 1:40 of OT for Kane to feed Trevor Daley for the game-winning goal.

Darling sharp: Scott Darling started in net and made several spectacular saves. He stopped all of Detroit's 22 shots on goal. Backup Mark Visentin allowed 4 goals in just more than 30 minutes of ice time, facing just 16 shots.

He said it: "I just figured I'd just take a swing and got lucky."
