Girls volleyball: Fremd tops Vernon Hills in season opener
Fremd's girls volleyball team began its 18th season under coach Curt Pinley by defeating host Vernon Hills 25-15, 25-14 on Thursday night.
The Vikings were led on attack by Ysabel Lee (6 kills, 4 blocks), Bailey Hooker (3) and Rebecca Uhrich (3) while Ulrich and Holly Straup each served 4 aces.
Straup also chipped in 4 assists while Natalie Freund had 3.
The Vikings' Carolina Sas had 10 digs followed by Freund and Jenny Miller with 4 apiece.
Barrington d. Mundelein: The visting Fillies recorded a 25-10, 20-25, 25-17 to even their record at 1-1 for the season.
Lake Park d. Conant: Host Conant (0-1) was led on attack by Rachel Delanois (4 kills), Karlie Heneghan (2) and Ayla Kljako (2).
Lake Zurich d. Buffalo Grove: Lake Zurich won the nonconference match 25-21, 25-22. Top attackers for BG (0-3) were Nadia Tarasova (4 kills), Dana Stutzman (3) Kanella Kalyviaris (2) and Sara Tolvstad (2).
Lake Forest d. Wheeling: The Scouts topped visiting Wheeling 25-16, 25-13. Timber Terrell had 8 kills for the Wildcats in their season opener while teammate Rochelle Laude added 4.
Loyola d. Prospect: Loyola posted a 25-15, 25-20 victory over Prospect (1-1) in Winnetka. Mary Mazurek had 5 kills for Prospect while teammates Maggie Porwit and Kaela Myers had 3 apiece. Myers also collected 11 digs while Michelle Haaning handed out 15 assists.
Maine South d Rolling Meadows: Maine South won the nonconference match 25-23 25-23. Maddie Sellergren led host Meadows (0-1) with 6 kills while Megan King (7 assists) and Megan Mich (4 assists) handled the setting.
Niles West d. Maine West. Niles West earned a 25-21, 25-14 victory in the CSL crossover in Des Plaines. Allison Grzebien led West (1-1) with 4 kills, 6 digs, and 1 block.
CLA d. Hiawatha: Christian Liberty Academy posted a 25-8, 22-25, 25-14 victory as Angie Nichols led the Chargers with 5 kills. Lexi Lee and Emily Naubert had 2 apiece. Cassie Swiderek and Jasmine Marsh each added 4 block kills in the Chargers season-opener.
WWS d. Elk Grove: Wheaton Warrenville South posted a 25-23, 25-16 victory over the Grenadiers (0-2), who were led by Carly Crothers (4 kills) and Mackenzie Vetter (3) on attack. Alex Masnica (8 assists) and Mary Cronin (3) set the offense.
